Proper seed placement for your field environment

No one else offers a seed guide like ours: we made it easier to find the right hybrids and varieties. You’ll find our specific seed recommendations for your soil environment.

How uniforn is your stand?

Research indicates fields with very erratic row spacing can reduce yields up to 20 bushels per acre. A gap in your corn stand could result from planter skip, insect damage, or corn leafed-out underground.

If your current plant spacing varies by more than 2
inches, you may have yields decrease by 5 - 10 bushels. Whether your seed units have been calibrated or not, all fields should have standard deviations checked. Here’s how to determine the standard deviation for your field.

Standard Deviation Computer

The ideal steps for taking standard deviation counts are as follows:
(If time is short, take fewer area counts in the field.)
Step 1: In four different areas of the field, measure the distance between 30 plants for each row, take one row count per area.
Step 2: For each row, enter the number for each plant onto the spreadsheet. There is an example on the standard deviation worksheet.
Step 3: The spreadsheet automatically figures the average standard deviation for each row and all of the rows.
Note: 0 is perfect. 2 is really good. Each time the number moves from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3 it equals 2.5-bushel yield loss due to spacing.
Also note: This measures emerged plants only. To determine planting accuracy of seed units, dig in soil where there are skips or un-emerged plants.

Use our TruPlant System

Fine-tune your planter units by using our TruPlant Calibration System. Mount your John Deere or Kinze planter units on this calibration stand to determine the optimum settings. This system also helps you determine your optimum ground speed, improves profits and maximizes your planter investment.
